Puck
“Puck.” The voice interrupted Puck’s dream. She was showing Breezy her favorite place in all of Underhill. “Puck, Sweetie, you need to wake up.”
Puck groaned.
The voice laughed. A warm hand gripped her shoulder and gave a little shake. “You don’t sleep like a human, Puck. Get up.”
The night came rushing back. She knew the warm body nestled in her arms was her lover, and hopefully her beloved. Puck listened for a moment to be sure she was still sleeping. Yes, gentle if shallow breaths came regularly. Then she rolled over to grin at Brigid.
“I didn’t mess with the fates.”
Brigid laughed again. “No, in fact you followed them with more accuracy than I would have imagined.”
Puck blinked. She looked back at Breezy, this time with all her senses open. The thin gold thread of fate was easy to find. It wound around the sleeping woman’s body like a nightdress and reached out to blend with the slightly darker lines around Puck herself.
“My fate?” Love and joy turned to terror in Puck’s heart. “I’ve never seen my fate before.”
“Relax, not all fates lead to death.” Brigid coaxed Puck to the side of the bed. “That’s not why I’m here.”
Away from Breezy, the threads of fate faded. Of course, one shouldn’t look at ones own fate. It took the fun out of things. Puck calmed herself as she sat beside Brigid, who was dressed in softer clothes than normal, specifically a blue dress without any armor.
“Then why do I have to wake up? I was dreaming with Breezy.” Puck looked over her shoulder to be sure Breezy still slept.
“Because you don’t want Oberon to find you sleeping or Gino for that matter.”
“You were supposed to conceal me.”
“I agreed to let you hide.” The sudden hardening of her tone caught Puck by surprise.
“Then...?”
“You took a human out of time.” This time it was Brigid who checked on Breezy. “I couldn’t conceal that, try as I might.”
Puck nodded. “When?”
“About fifteen minutes ago, in the far fields.” Brigid produce a glass with orange liquid in it. “Bress has gone to delay them as much as he can, but you have little time.”
She understood that Brigid was telling her to run. Any other day, Puck would have already been gone. “What’s that?” she nodded to the glass in Brigid’s hand.
“Orange juice.” The goddess made it sound so benign. “You should drink it.”
Puck stared at the glass. “If I even touch that glass, it will be disloyal to Oberon. He could cut me off.”
“Yes.” Brigid nodded. “You’d need a new sponsor.” She offered the juice again.
“Who would sponsor me? None of the other lords would anger Oberon like that.”
Brigid nodded again. “Then you’ll need to look elsewhere for a sponsor.”
She offered the orange juice again. Puck looked at it, then up to the face of the goddess trying to give it to her. Puck hadn’t seen this side of Brigid in person before. She’d heard about her kindness in stories. The kinds of entertainments Oberon wanted usually put Puck on her bad side.
